Our Procedures in Teaching Sessions

We start by working on homework that is due the next day, or by preparing for the next day’s exam. This gives immediate benefit and reduces anxiety. While working on the immediate need, our tutors learn the student’s deficiencies. The student gets experience in needed skills during the course of finishing homework, and our tutor indirectly diagnoses the student’s needs, without spending time on a separate diagnostic exam. We set aside some of the hour’s tutoring time to work on specific skills.

We do not usually start with a diagnostic test. Our tutors put a few sample questions at a time in front of the student and have the student work the questions out loud, so that our tutors can hear the student’s analysis and reasoning. If the student works a problem well, then the tutor moves on to a different type of question. If the student has difficulty, then the tutor can help immediately, without having spent time on a diagnostic test.

Some of our teachers are certified teachers or licensed professional engineers. One of our teachers was a chemical engineer for 25 years. Another has a Ph.D. in Biology and works in research. Some of our teachers have the rapport for teaching elementary age children.

One of our English teachers has over 30 years of experience and a masters degree in special education.

One of our Spanish teachers has a degree from a university in Columbia. Another used to be a diplomat for another South American country. Our French teacher is from France and teaches students from kindergarten through adults. Our German teacher studied graduate level courses in Germany and has taught university and high school level German in the United States. Our Latin teacher has over 20 years experience, sometimes teaching her students to speak and sing in Latin.

Homeschooling

Educere assists students enroll in Texas Tech University's ISD (independent School District) for individual courses, or for all the courses leading to a high school diploma authorized by the Texas Education Agency. These are distance learning or correspondence classes. Some classes are online. Others are only handled through the U.S. mail. Students may complete the work for these classes entirely by themselves, or may come to Educere for whatever amount of assistance they want. Educere helps other homeschooling students with whatever curriculums they have chosen themselves. Educere's standard tutoring rates apply.

Summer Programs

Elementary and middle school students are taking advantage of the summer to jump ahead. As they prepared for final exams, the students and their parents saw their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Some parents have made a check list for our tutors to cover with their children: fractions, decimals, word problems, paragraph writing and grammar.

One four year old student is learning phonics and Spanish this summer. A seventh grader is discussing her summer reading list with us and writing essays about the books. She will have an advantage when she starts school in the fall.

Special Programs

American Sign Language

Some students with severe dyslexia have a difficult time studying the written form of a foreign language. For these students – or for anyone interested in learning to sign – Educere Tutoring of Houston offers a full course in American Sign Language. This course, led by a teacher with a master’s degree in Deaf Studies, is accepted as a fulfillment of a foreign language requirement by some Houston-area high schools.

Accredited Alternative Education

If you are taking an online correspondence courses offered by Texas Tech University or the University of Texas, you can come to Educere – for as many or few sessions as required – to help you complete your correspondence course. You study here just as if you were enrolled here, but formal credits are issued by the correspondence department of the university. Math Grade Restoration

This program, offered in association with Spring Branch ISD, gives students the required review of Algebra I and Algebra II in order to prepare them for the following year’s math course.

Study Skills

We work with students to help them improve their study skills, either integrating these skills into regular tutoring sessions or teaching them as a separate course. Skills help students develop include:

Using time, setting priorities

Making a time diary
Making a daily plan

Reading a textbook without having to read it over and over again

SQ3R
Skimming
Scanning

Studying for tests

Condensing and organizing material
Using memory keys
Using class notes

Taking tests successfully

Do not watch a movie on the night before an exam
Get sleep and rest before an exam
Write formulas and key facts before looking at exam
Use methods to reduce worry
Use different pacing for short answer tests and essay tests
